The Big Switch: it’s never too late by John Thomas – Book Review

Work life balance is a genuine problem that the youth of India, especially who are working in the corporate sector are facing. Not many people of the older generation understand this problem and the youth has nowhere to turn to, which causes frustration and in extreme cases anxiety and even depression.

John Thomas has spoken about this issue of work life balance in his debut novel.

My Review –

The book is about Keith, who is a young engineer and works with H&G, a giant IT company. He is talented and wants to achieve something in life. He is hard working and dedicated. He is under so much of pressure at work, to be the best performer, that he has no time for himself or his lady love Maya.

He does feel that there is something missing in his life but never tries to correct it, till Maya decides to break up with him and move on in life. This is a big jolt which makes him think of his life and his happiness.

The author speaks of questions that every youth of todays generation ask. It could be questions about salary or happiness. Is it more important to have a big salary package or to have a job which gives you more happiness with less salary? Is our job giving us satisfaction and happiness or is it giving us pain? Is it wise to change career for happiness and satisfaction? How much risk can we or should we take..

The author has covered another very important aspect in the lives of the youth, which is how important is your partner in your life. It is really important that the partner understand you, your job requirement and your mental turmoil. This at times can make or break your moral as well. The two female characters in this book convey this very import message in the book; the good and the bad partner.

The author has done a good job in keeping the language simple and a smooth flowing narrative. All the characters have a significant place in the story and support the story really well.

The story and the plot are great, it doesn’t give reader the scope to speculate.

Overall, great work by John Thomas. The book has a fresh prospective and a great narrative style. It will attract all the readers of this generation, who go through this struggle of fast paced job and corporate pressure.

I would rate it a 5/5. I totally loved it and there were a few scenes which I felt have happened in my life at some point in time in my corporate career.
